Here are some tips that we all already know most of, but a reminder is not a bad thing especially when you look at the savings you can do over a period of one year.
So how to save electricity in your home?
1. Turn off unnecessary lights
Even take it a step further and switch all the bulbs to efficient LED bulb and strip lights.
2. Use natural light
Good thing it is mostly sunny in U.A.E so take advantage of that
3. Use task lighting
Light the desk or sofa area you require light to carry on your work or for the kids to finish their homework’s before bedtime, instead of turning on the whole room lights.
4. Take shorter showers & turn water off when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth
This is an obvious one, but sometimes we tend to forget about and go along singing to our favorite rhythms.
5. Fix that leaky faucet
It might seem a minor thing, but added to other habits to follow in this list, can add up to couple of dirhams of savings.
6. Unplug unused electronics
Standby power can account for 10% of an average household’s annual electricity use.
7. Replace the desktop computer
If you’re still using that old desktop, recycle it and switch to your laptop specially with all the new tech innovation we are witnessing with battery efficiency.
8. Not home? Turn off the air conditioner
Add a smart thermostat as well and let it assist you on saving electricity.
9. Recycle or donate that old TV
Yes, old appliances are less efficient compared to the newer models, so an update every decade can have a major impact on electricity consumption.
10. Be strategic with window coverings
A foldable blind can be easily used to let natural lights in during the day and still have capability of blocking it when it’s not needed.
11. Hang dry your laundry
Again, Dubai is a very sunny city so why not take advantage of it and save electricity. Also wash laundry in cold water whenever possible as it skips the energy required to raise up the temperature.
12. Toss a towel in the dryer
A dry towel added to your dryer load can significantly reduce drying times.
13. Skip the heat-dry setting for the dishwasher
That heat-dry setting is expensive and consumes a lot of energy.
14. Set your fridge at the right temperature
Keeping your fridge and freezer at the right temperature can save you electricity. Simply set the temperature of the fridge between 2°C and 3°C, and the freezer at -18°C
